Dance choreographer Betty Law uses contemporary dance structure to liberate the actor in this weekly performance workout. The goal – to allow performers to use their stories, open their bodies, and reveal their hearts – utilizing an array of warm-up techniques drawing from Yoga, Pilates, Somatics, and basic theater training. Classes range from the highly athletic to the more internally focused, and can include release technique, floorwork, inversions, gestures, and improvisation. The workshop culminates each week in a challenging phrase with plenty of room for development of personal style and performance technique. Throughout the month, highlights will be placed on contact improvisation technique, composition, and topical dialogue in preparation for public performance. Students interested will commit to additional rehearsal time.

Betty Law is a mutli-disciplinary performer, choreographer, and yoga instructor. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Theater and Dance. She continued her training at Duke University’s American Dance Festival, where she studied with Peter Dimuro of Liz Lehrman Dance Company, and taught in his Community Crossover program. While studying in Austin, she co-founded realmdanceproject, and garnered a city grant to work with at risk youth in the Texas Youth Commission. She left Austin in 2001 for New York City, where she pursued acting and independent choreography before becoming a member of Notes in Motion dance company. Through Notes in Motion, she aided in designing a composition program for the public schools through an alliance with Young Audiences New York. Presently, she lives in Manhattan Beach with her husband and daughter, and teaches yoga throughout the South Bay.
